When you're not at work, what do you get up to?
When I’m not at work, I try to get off the grid with my wife and two children, Bella (6) and Toby (3). When we're not heading off the beaten track, I like to trail run around the state. I also do a bit of beer-making in my spare time and have won a few country prizes.
What change would you like to see in the world, and why?
I’ve always worked in not-for-profits, and am passionate about people. I believe everyone has the right to be happy and that our service systems should support everyone to achieve their goals.
What were you doing before working at TACSI?
Most recently, I worked as Program Director at Community Centres SA. My portfolio included the Community Connections program, a statewide initiative responding to loneliness in communities, as well as working alongside the Department of Innovation and Skills to deliver adult community education across the state.
I was also lucky enough to work on projects which saw me develop online community development modules for volunteers and community centre employees, and embedding social work placements into community centres across the state.
I also played an active active role on the Australian Neighbourhood Houses and Centres Association board.
Who inspires you, and why?
I take a lot of my inspiration from the communities that I walk alongside and talk to. For me, they're the inspiration for what I do.
Looking back at your career, what’s been the highlight?
Some of my highlights have been working in the UK heritage sector, where I worked with some incredible artists and objects. A few highlights include working on Vivienne Westwood's world tour, looking after two mummies and holding a Picasso.
What are you reading/watching/listening to at the moment?
I listen to a lot of podcasts on my drive to work, and they're usually history-based. I’m currently re-reading Diplomacy by Henry Kissinger, which is a total geek-fest for me.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you 'grew up'?
I didn't really have an ideal role, but always knew that I wanted to work with people and I wanted to make a difference in the world.
What's a book, film or resource that you would recommend to someone interested in social impact?
I'd say the biggest resource I'd recommend is to go and talk to the communities that you’re walking alongside and actively listen. The gold will come!
What's something on your bucket list?
I've always wanted to travel to India via rail. It’s been on the bucket list for years now!
