We're just getting started on our new stream of work to radically redesign social services. To keep up to date on our progress you can read our weekly blog posts, periodic project papers and our project description.
Australia's social services often struggle to achieve the outcomes they aspire to and are facing an increasingly challenging financial environment. Health services are stretched by an ageing population and the demands of chronic disease management, while most child protection practitioners acknowledge the system is out of whack. We need a radically different way to address longstanding challenges. More of the same just won't do. We need to innovate.
TACSI exists to enable social innovation - to find new ways to address unmet social needs and build social assets. Our first project will find new ways to enable more families to thrive. Over the next nine months, we'll work to co-design, test, and scale practice and policy that does more good stuff with, for, by, and between families, communities, businesses, organisations, state and local government.
Our hybrid approach balances creativity and critical thinking. Our team brings together expertise and a track record in design thinking, social policy, social science, and business. We will be imaginative with our ideas and in adopting and adapting solutions from elsewhere but we will also be asking the tough questions: Are we really tackling the right problem? What's the evidence that a new solution will work? Is this solution sustainable?
We don't consult, we collaborate. At all stages of our project we will work with people, practitioners and policy makers to move from naming problems to outcomes, and to co-design solutions. We believe the best solutions actively engage and enable users as co-producers.
Our vehicle is the prototype. We're not only going to talk and think about what could be different, within nine months our plan is to build and run a functioning version of a different kind of system. From our prototyping we'll learn what does and doesn't work, improve on our ideas, and ultimately get to the stage where we can create a business case and a service blueprint for new practice and policy.
TACSI's aim is to develop and spread an innovation approach that leads to boldy better social services. If you're a public service in South Australia that's up for thinking and doing different, we hope you'll follow the project's progress and get in touch if you're interested in working with us now and in the future.
